You Don’t Need Permission Anymore

When the cost of building approaches zero, passion becomes the only permission you need.

For most of my life, hell, for most of human history, having a good idea wasn't enough.

Somewhere between idea and execution, you would run into knowledge you didn't have, skills you couldn't afford or a resource you couldn't get access to.

You could know exactly what you wanted to create and why it should exist, but if you couldn't conquer those stumbling blocks, the idea stayed just an idea.

Today we're seeing AI change that in ways we're only starting to understand.

Software has been an excellent example of this for the majority of my career. You could have an idea for an application that would make your business better, faster and stronger, but unless you already knew how to build software or had enough money to pay someone who did, that idea would wither and die on the vine.

The frustrating thing was the problem didn't have to be unimportant or difficult to solve, it just had to be expensive enough, complicated enough or niche enough that solving it wouldn't return an acceptable ROI.

This meant there were countless problems that went unsolved, not because they didn't matter, but because they couldn't be justified. The almighty bottom line claimed another victim.

For decades, this was the reality of building software. It was expensive, time consuming and required people with specialized skills, so the potential return had to justify the investment. I'm not saying that somebody was guarding the gates of "Problem Solvedistan" based on economics, but I'm not not saying that either.

The truth is, before now we really did have to guard the gates. The cost of building software, distributing it and supporting it (which is an enormous cost) was too great to risk on something that wasn't a sure thing, for most companies and engineers.

That meant we had to make choices, sometimes difficult ones, about which ideas were worth pursuing and which ones weren't. You could love an idea, believe deeply that it would help people and still decide that there just wasn't a justifiable argument for spending the money required to bring it to life.

Over the years, I have been on both sides of those decisions more times than I can count. What makes this moment so interesting is that AI is starting to change the math behind them.

The cost of going from an interesting idea to working software is falling drastically. As that cost falls, so too does the threshold an idea has to cross before it's worth taking a chance on. Eventually that threshold will cease to exist.

Now friends, this is where things start to get interesting. Really interesting.

When the cost of taking an idea from your head and turning it into working software approaches zero, the question of whether an idea is worth building becomes almost moot. The question goes from "Should this exist" to "Why shouldn't this exist".

That might sound like a small change, but I think it represents an enormous shift in how we think about software and the problems we choose to solve with it.

For most of my career, we started from no. An idea had to battle its way to yes. Cost needed to be justified, while the people, the infrastructure and support were considered in a strange sort of calculus that produced a somewhat arbitrary number that decided the fate of an idea.

To be honest, that process made sense. We weren't doing it because we hated ideas, we were doing it because saying yes was expensive, and saying yes to the wrong idea could destroy companies.

Now here's the exciting part: AI is making saying yes easier by derisking failure.

Think about how much that statement changes the entire equation. If evolving an idea into a product requires six months, a team of developers and hundreds of thousands of dollars, being wrong hurts. A lot. You need research, projections, market validation and a metric ton of evidence to convince everyone involved that this particular roll of the dice won't come up snake eyes. That the risk is worth it.

And even after all of that, you can still be wrong. It's maddening.

The thing is, AI doesn't suddenly make us better at predicting which ideas will work. We can still convince ourselves that something is brilliant right up until the moment the rest of the world tells us otherwise. And they will friends. They will. Loudly.

What AI changes is how much it costs us to find out, which is a very different flavor of derisking.

If I can now take an idea far enough to put it in front of real people, use it inside my own business or simply experience the damn thing myself, without spending many moons and oodles of dollars getting there, I don't need to be certain, I need to be passionate.

Passion has always been plentiful. The problem was that passion couldn't pay a team of developers for six months while you figured out whether your idea had legs. But now, now passion IS currency.

For the first time I can think of, being passionate about an idea is all the justification you need to start. Passion is the fuel and AI is the tool of that passion.

One thing I learned over my long career is that passion without resources was just potential energy. You could be absolutely convinced that something should exist, spend years thinking about it, sketching it out and talking about it, but eventually you ran headlong into the realities we have been discussing.

Someone had to build the blasted thing. Now you are that someone.

You don't need to convince anyone that your idea is worth their time before you can explore it. You don't need to convince someone holding the purse strings that there's enough upside to justify the expense. You don't need to find a technical cofounder, raise a bunch of money or spend the next three years learning how to become a software developer before you can make the thing in your head real.

You can just do it.

Which is the most important sentence in this entire essay. You aren't shackled by skills, experience or money.

You can sit down today with an idea and start working through it. You can explain the problem, explore different approaches, challenge your own assumptions and eventually turn the thing that exists in your head into something you can actually use. That others can actually use, that can make the world, even for one person, a better place.

We spend a lot of time discussing what AI means for software developers, companies and the technology industry as a whole. Those are important conversations, for sure, but they are boring. What's interesting to me is what happens when the ability to create software escapes the boundaries of the software industry altogether.

What happens when the person who understands the problem is also able to create the solution? I have no earthly idea what that world looks like, but I mean, that's what makes it so damn exciting.

Your passion is your currency. If there's something rattling around in your head that you think should exist, maybe it's time to stop waiting for someone else to agree with you and build it.

You don't need permission anymore.
